A smart paint that cools your home

A new high-tech paint from SolCold that cools when exposed to sunlight could provide a better way to cool buildings and perhaps even solve the long-standing problem of cooling things in space. In hot weather, electricity consumption soars as people turn on the air conditioning, pushing the grid to its limits and raising energy bills. The SolCold technology uses a double-layered coating to reduce temperatures by up to 10 degrees C below those attained with traditional white paint coating. The paint has tested well in the lab, with some caveats-so far it works better on metal roofs than concrete, and is more successful over rooms with low ceilings than high ones. Although this paint is more expensive than standard options, it’s said to offer quite substantial energy savings- a decrease in energy consumption by up to 60 percent, while lasting 10 to 15 years before needing a new coat. The first clients are thus expected to come from the business world. www.solcold.com

Energy independence at your home or office

gable-59793_1280 (1)

Rather than selling your solar power to the grid cheap and buying it back at a higher price, Redflow ZCell batteries let you store your own solar energy for when you need it. It gives you greater energy independence and keeps your lights on when grid power blacks out. Australia is the ideal place for energy storage in the home or business, with high energy costs, widespread solar panel deployment and rapidly disappearing government solar feed-in tariffs, and this tech was developed in Australia. www.redflow.com

A startup that allows travelling mums to send breast milk home

099AB2FF-AADF-4A82-B630-1A112409FF50

US law requires employers to provide nursing mothers with a “reasonable break time” and a place to express milk, but those requirements do not extend to business travel. Milk Stork is a startup that allows a traveling mother to ship her milk to her baby at home with a cooler that arrives in her hotel room as a postpaid package. She can send up to 72 ounces per day with the materials provided, and packages are shipped overnight anywhere in the United States. This service is making it more possible for women to continue their careers while having children. www.milkstork.com

Special socks for the homeless

IMG_1935

Bombas has created donation socks which have a reinforced seam to make them more durable. They are treated with anti-microbial technology, so they deter fungus and don’t need to be washed frequently . They only come in black, which is more stain resistant. In February Bombas created an event called “60K day,” which was based on the concept that, on any given night, 60,000 people in New York end up at a homeless shelter. The plan was to bring individuals from 60 of New York’s hottest companies to visit a shelter and hand out 60,000 socks. https://www.fastcompany.com/40445016/how-one-sock-brand-is-helping-startups-step-up-their-social-good-game?
