An automated warehouse of the future

Imagine a huge warehouse with groceries going in one end and shopping orders coming out the other. Humans do the unpacking and packing, while in the middle, robots sort and rearrange this vast inventory 24 hours a day. This is the latest highly automated warehouse of Ocado, a British online-only supermarket that also sells its technology to other global grocers. This algorithmically designed warehouse maximizes available space while digitizing some of the more arduous, complex and dull aspects of warehouse work. And by licensing and selling its automation technology to other companies, Ocado monetises the research and development needed to consistently disrupt itself.  https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/8/17331250/automated-warehouses-jobs-ocado-andover-amazon?

The World’s First IBO – Initial Bear Offering

The idea behind LOOP Upcycling is to turn corporate waste into wonder. We re-use old unwanted corporate uniforms to reduce landfill and remove an environmental challenge for big business. At the same time we create life-changing jobs for some of the most disadvantaged members of the community. The opportunity to create this unique business started with Virgin Australia who wanted to discard their old corporate uniforms in a safe, secure, environmentally friendly and ethical way. So together, we developed the “Branson Bear” made from recycled flight crew uniforms. Instead of sending the uniforms as waste to landfill we started creating and supplying thousands of versions of this unique and wonderful bear. To produce our much loved teddy bears on a commercial scale we are inviting the crowdfunding community to be part of our journey. The crowdfunding campaign starts with ReadyFundGo on 30 April. https://readyfundgo.com/project/loop

Creating an innovative culture that sparks useful ideas

IdeaSpies Enterprise

Research has shown that long term organisational success depends on developing, testing and implementing new ideas- not being satisfied with the status quo.  The increasing pace of change resulting from the digital age is putting more pressure on the need for ideas that lead to new products and services as well as ideas that improve the way we work. The easiest way to get ideas to improve your business is from your employees. They understand your business and want you to succeed, so why don’t most organisations do this well? There are three key reasons: Established organisations are focused on execution. Managers want their people to focus on what needs to be done soon rather than think about the future. Many managers believe that ideas from lower level staff are not useful, hence it’s a waste of time to ask for and consider them. There isn’t a simple process to capture and rate ideas from employees. An innovative culture- what is it? The most successful organisations have leaders who understand the value of innovation and address the above issues They encourage an innovative culture by offering positive employee experiences which results in high employee engagement The best people stay and there is a constant flow of ideas that improve the business. Innovative cultures offer jobs that promote teamwork and offer opportunities to make a contribution so talented people can learn and progress. When a culture is innovative, people are honest and open, encouraged to share ideas and able to explore initiatives without fear of failure. There is recognition that failing to try anything new is often the biggest risk. People feel more empowered and rewarded when they know that they will receive credit for ideas they suggest, their ideas will be seriously considered for testing or implementation, and rewards are both transparent and timely. For anyone thinking that innovation is a fad, 2018 will mark adoption of the world’s first global standard for innovation processes. We all have choices about how much thought and time we put into something. When our ideas and suggestions are not adequately considered those of us on the left of this chart just seek to contribute elsewhere. Insync research has shown that 51% of people rate lack of job enrichment as the most important reason they leave their job. More and more people want to work in an innovative culture where work has meaning, brands have genuine value and new thinking leads to useful ideas being implemented. Purpose and passion are now the lifeblood of a successful organisation. Organisations with innovative cultures embracing new thinking are the most likely to succeed. Encouraging an innovative culture Leading tech companies have innovative cultures. However many more established organisations have hierarchical structures that make it difficult to adapt to change. Therefore they are vulnerable to disruption. To avoid disruption and encourage an innovative culture there must be leadership from the top with innovation as a key strategic focus. There needs to be a process for encouraging useful ideas that’s well understood. Some organisations have established innovation management positions that are tasked with promoting and supporting innovation across the organisation. Other suggestions to encourage an innovative culture are: including ideas from employees or innovation on committee agendas, an award for innovation, investing in an idea capture tool that gives people at all levels a voice in contributing ideas, and ensuring leaders are well trained so they are receptive to suggestions and ideas from their employees. Innovation should involve all people in an organisation, not just a select few. IdeaSpies Enterprise is a new idea capture tool that’s designed to turn the tide in your favour… naturally.

IdeaSpies Enterprise

True leaders spark innovation by creating an inclusive, open culture  Too many leaders struggle with innovation because they see it as an isolated need or limited to new product development. Instead, innovation is the direct result of a healthy internal ecosystem, creating an innovative culture where work has meaning, brands have genuine value and new thinking  leads to useful ideas being implemented. IdeaSpies Enterprise helps to create an innovative culture by inspiring and encouraging the implementation of ideas that help an organisation succeed. This very easy to use tool enables an organisation to create an environment of inclusion that encourages internal champions and earns trust. Purpose and passion are the lifeblood of a successful company. Why is this so vital? According a Gallup Report  the percentage of adults who work full time for an employer and are engaged at work — they are highly involved in and enthusiastic about their work and workplace — is just 15% worldwide. This low % implies significant wasted potential, given that business units in the top quartile of Gallup’s global employee engagement database are 17% more productive and 21% more profitable than those in the bottom quartile. IdeaSpies Enterprise was conceived to turn the tide in your favour… naturally. What is IdeaSpies Enterprise? IdeaSpies Enterprise is an idea capture tool that offers a simple, effective, fun way to encourage and rate ideas. It’s easy to use because it’s been tested and refined via the public IdeaSpies platform. IdeaSpies is the demonstration model for IdeaSpies Enterprise and you can try it easily by registering. Hundreds of people around the world have already registered on the public IdeaSpies platform to post ideas. IdeaSpies Enterprise is the private version. People at all levels of an organisation are encouraged to register using their organization email address, then they can see their colleagues’ ideas to rate and comment on them as well as add their own ideas. They can use their own names or anonymous Idea Spy names. Only people with an organisation’s email address can see the ideas. The platform can operate independently. Pre-arranged judges select the best ideas based on the support (i.e. ratings) shown for them. Winners are rewarded on a timely basis and selected ideas are implemented. This short video shows how it works https://youtu.be/D48Pzs6QwLM Why should you subscribe to IdeaSpies Enterprise? One of the biggest challenges in leading teams is encouraging innovative thought. There’s never enough time for team members to be creative and share their ideas. Many employees feel inhibited when the process forces creativity and ideas through structured, time-pressured sessions – a less effective way to encourage and spark creative and innovative ideas. IdeaSpies Enterprise solves these challenges. It opens up the ideas conversation and encourages innovative thinking. It does this by: Generating useful, effective and actionable ideas Research has shown that long-term organisational success depends on developing, testing and introducing new ideas- not being satisfied with the status quo. The easiest way to generate ideas that improve your business is from your team members. They understand your business and want it to succeed. Increasing staff engagement and retention An innovative culture led from the top also has higher staff engagement and retention. Insync research has shown that 51% of people rate lack of job enrichment as the most important reason they leave their job. Your people will feel more enriched and empowered when there is an easy, transparent and effective mechanism to share their ideas, with a timely reward system, ensuring they will receive credit for ideas they suggest and that their ideas will be seriously considered for testing or implementation. Recording ideas and contributing sources also helps to solidify teams across silos which typically limit ideas outside their realm. While there are many enterprise social networks that can add to job enrichment, IdeaSpies is different- it facilitates: 1. a focus on idea generation 2. stimulation of ideas due to being directly linked to the public IdeaSpies ideas platform 3. participation because the platform is responsive on all devices 4. timely rewards that encourage participation 5. psychological safety given ideas can be posted anonymously 6. use across an organisation due to its simple and fun functionality, without a need for training 7. reduced negativity given it offers an opportunity to offer solutions to perceived problems 8. accountability for recognising useful ideas. In summary IdeaSpies Enterprise is a simple, agile idea sharing program that aligns a business with the internal and external values shaping change and that enables employees to connect those values to positive actions. Easy to learn and simple to use The IdeaSpies Enterprise platform’s simplicity means it’s easy for you, as a leader with many demands on your time, to participate with team members. A key success factor for enterprise social networks is participation by organisation leadership. IdeaSpies Enterprise provides you with a program through which to lead your team. Be part of a Community of Innovation Leaders As an IdeaSpies Enterprise Leader you’ll join a select group of business innovation leaders. Through this group  you can compare results and learn more about practical ways to create an innovative culture which improves staff engagement and retention. This fuels outside-in thinking and influence, to avoid inadvertently becoming a closed culture.
