Prisons in Norway mimic the outside world as much as possible to prepare inmates for freedom. At this high security prison Halden, rooms include en-suite bathrooms with mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs. Activities are arranged 8am to 8pm and include sports and skills training. The guards’ job description says they must motivate the inmate “so that his sentence is as meaningful, enlightening and rehabilitating as possible.” Half the guards are women. Norway has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world at 20%.
