Seaweed farming to combat climate change

IMG_1957

Seaweeds can grow very fast – at rates more than 30 times those of land-based plants. Because they de-acidify seawater, making it easier for anything with a shell to grow, they are also the key to shellfish production. And by drawing CO₂ out of the ocean waters (thereby allowing the oceans to absorb more CO₂ from the atmosphere) they help fight climate change. https://theconversation.com/how-farming-giant-seaweed-can-feed-fish-and-fix-the-climate-81761

Turn CO2 into fuel

catalyst1 (1)

Researchers at the CSIRO and University of Adelaide have created a new catalyst that efficiently converts CO2 into a synthetic form of natural gas. Not only does this highly active catalyst have the potential to help us solve the problem of CO2 emissions on earth but it could also help in the Mars program. Mars’ atmosphere is 96% CO2, and with SpaceX’s Elon Musk recently announcing it will launch a crewed mission to Mars, they plan to produce methane (fuel) on Mars via the same reaction. https://blog.csiro.au/turning-co2-into-fuel/

GPS tracking devices to be used to reduce domestic violence

child-1439468_1280

For the 1st time in NSW, under a trial being launched by the NSW Government, high-risk domestic violence offenders will be fitted with GPS tracking devices. Victims will also be given the option to carry their own GPS unit to alert authorities should the offender come within a certain distance. The victim would then be contacted by authorities and advised of the imminent danger. This new measure is not only for sentenced or paroled offenders, but could also be used to monitor compliance with bail conditions where a victim is protected by an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) with geographical restrictions. A magistrate could order the issuing of a GPS device, fitted with an alarm and worn on an offender’s ankle, as part of a bail application or sentencing. A magistrate or state parole authority could also order it as part of parole conditions.
