Food from Electricity? Shocking new way to deal with world hunger.

electric food spoon

A Finnish research team has taken a step towards the future of food by developing a method for producing food from electricity. If scaling it up proves to be successful, it could help in the fight against world hunger and climate change. The researchers created a batch of single-cell protein that is nutritious enough to serve for dinner using a system powered by renewable energy. The process requires electricity, water, carbon dioxide, and microbes. After exposing the raw materials to electrolysis in a bioreactor, a powder forms consisting of protein and carbohydrates. Textures can also be changed by altering microbes. https://futurism.com/a-team-of-scientists-just-made-food-from-electricity-and-it-could-be-the-solution-to-world-hunger/

Restaurant gets fresh herbs from nature strip

IMG_1907

Chef Emile Avramides, a graduate of the exacting kitchens of Gordon Ramsay’s Maze restaurants in London and Melbourne, has chosen a quiet shopping strip in Randwick to debut his Sydney restaurant, Clove Lane. A clever reason for this location is to grow fresh herbs for the restaurant on the adjoining nature strip. http://www.goodfood.com.au/eat-out/news/maze-graduate-to-open-clove-lane-in-randwick-20170309-guv1ld

A deposit return scheme that reduces littering

IMG_1744

A deposit return scheme that experts say drastically reduces the number of plastic bottles and cans littering streets and seas is being introduced around the world. The idea has the backing of global drinks company Coca-Cola and comes amid warnings that the worldwide plastics binge poses as serious a threat as climate change. South Australia introduced container deposit legislation in 1977! https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jul/04/tackle-uk-plastic-bottle-problem-with-money-back-scheme-ministers-told?

Umbrella Cup Holder

AI-Umbrella-With-Cup-Holder

For those of us multi-taskers…It’s essentially a cup holder that attaches to the handle of your umbrella. It’s got a gimbal mechanism to ensure that your cups always stay level and don’t spill. That way, you can carry your drink (and even an extra one!) while holding your umbrella with one hand and whatever else you need to carry in the other. 😀 https://technabob.com/blog/2014/03/24/morella-umbrella-cup-holder/

Packaging that changes colour when food spoils

IMG_1647

A Brazilian company has partnered with universities in the U.S. and Brazil to create food packaging that will change color to alert you when it spoils. The package uses PH indicators to determine whether the food has spoiled. The first prototype of the technology was released last year–if successfully incorporated, it could help with problems of food waste and prevent consumers from navigating confusing labels. https://www.psfk.com/2017/05/packaging-changes-colors-to-alert-shoppers-when-food-spoils.html
