A new way to lower cost and delays in new drug development

Globally, all pharmaceutical companies face the same challenge of finding effective drug targets that will translate into higher drug approval rates. Hyperdrive Science technology increases the accuracy of, and cuts the time required for, drug candidate selection, reducing the costs of drug development. The technology takes advantage of naturally occurring processes that allow genomic information from a cell to be translated into its corresponding protein library to be tested for new and emergent drug targets. Hyperdrive Science has been supported by the ON Accelerate program at CSIRO. http://www.oninnovation.com.au/en/ON-teams/ON-Tribe/ON-Accelerate4-Teams/Hyperdrive

A new stress test for elite athletes

Sports scientists realise that athletes must be adequately stressed to stimulate performance increases. However excessive stress caused by over-training or insufficient recovery increases the likelihood of subsequent injury or a failure to reach peak performance. Inflametric is a simple finger prick blood metabolic stress test that is both sensitive and cost-effective. By using their test sports scientists can accurately devise the exercise programs that support an athlete’s preparation, and following injury, plan and train for recovery and re-entry into competition. Inflametric has been supported by the ON Accelerate program at CSIRO. http://www.oninnovation.com.au/en/ON-teams/ON-Tribe/ON-Accelerate4-Teams/Inflametric

A watch that tracks Parkinson’s

Global Kinetics, a startup based in Melbourne, has developed a wearable device called the Parkinson’s KinetiGraph (PKG) which continuously tracks the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It is designed for patients to wear for 6-10 days at a time, with the data then used to better inform doctors about how to manage and treat their patients. PKG is reported to be the first tech to provide an objective record of a Parkinson’s patient’s symptoms over time. www.globalkineticscorporation.com.au

Pain assessment through facial recognition technology

Imagine you are in excruciating pain, but you can’t tell anyone. This is the reality for millions of non-communicative people world-wide, such as those with moderate to severe dementia. PainChek’s point of care apps utilise facial recognition technology to detect facial micro-expressions which are indicative of pain, to provide these people with a voice. PainChek, previously called EPat, has been supported by the ON Accelerate program at CSIRO. http://www.oninnovation.com.au/en/ON-teams/ON-Tribe/Accelerate2/ePAT

A more effective way of producing vaccines

Over half a million people die every year because of seasonal influenza. The solution is vaccination. Vaximiser is a premium high-yield egg that increases vaccine growth tenfold. It helps improve production of vaccines, which means individuals have access to more vaccines in less time. Vaximiser will enhance the capacity to respond to disease outbreaks and help to protect the world from the next pandemic. http://www.oninnovation.com.au/en/ON-teams/ON-Tribe/Accelerate1/Vaximiser

Saving lives using our smartphones

Each year around 54,000 Australians experience a heart attack. About 60 per cent survive and are recommended to complete cardiac rehabilitation (CR) to reduce the risk of a second heart attack. Cardihab provides convenient CR from wherever you are, using an evidence based, clinically validated smartphone app that shares patient information with a secure clinician web portal. Cardihab has been supported by the ON Accelerate program at CSIRO. http://www.oninnovation.com.au/en/ON-teams/ON-Tribe/Accelerate1/Cardihab

The end to the spread of the Zika virus

Scientists from the CSIRO and the University of California, San Diego have vaccinated mosquitoes to be resistant to spreading the Zika virus. They engineered a gene cluster and injected it into mosquito embryos. These injected mosquitoes were unable to pick up the Zika virus and hence were unable to spread it. https://blog.csiro.au/latest-buzz-about-zika-resistant-mozzies
