External liquid cooler for desktop computer

The standard fan cooler used inside computers takes too much space thus limiting insertion of better hardware. One of the methods used to improve computer performance is to use a liquid cooler to prevent overheating. Most current liquid coolers are placed internally, however there is the potential for leaking and extra noise. Our team has designed an external liquid cooling system which means more space for hardware in the computer while avoiding damage caused by leaking. Our cooling system  increases the efficiency and security of the CPU.

‘Thank you beep’ for friendlier driving

Dear Car Manufacturers, Every vehicle has a horn – usually used to express anger, frustration or as an alert of danger. Sometimes these have a purpose. But the car horn as it currently exists does not do a good job of saying ‘thank you’. Please invent an additional car horn that allows you to say thanks. A friendlier, more pleasant sound – to be used when someone lets you in, gives way to you, backs up for you or lets you have a car space you’re both after. At night, it’s hard to see whether someone gives you a wave of thanks, but a ‘thank you’ beep would do the job. It can also be a goodnight beep for when you’re leaving a friend’s place. Something that doesn’t annoy the neighbours. Let there be lots of thank you beeps and less angry beeps on our roads!

Digital Cash Settlement using Blockchain

Several of the world’s largest banks are in the process of investing around $50 million to create a digital cash system using blockchain technology to settle financial transactions. They aim to develop a system to make clearing and settlement in financial markets more efficient. The new system called Finality could launch in 2020. Blockchain, which first emerged as the software underpinning the cryptocurrency bitcoin, is a shared ledger of transactions maintained by a network of computers. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-banks-blockchain-exclusive/exclusive-banks-to-invest-around-50-million-in-digital-cash-settlement-project-sources-idUSKCN1SM2U0?

A faster and more sustainable way to extract rare earths

A team of Chinese scientists has developed a new process that could ignificantly reduce the time needed to extract rare earths from ore, and it could also cut industry pollution. Extracting the trace metal elements is difficult and takes days to complete, but researchers have found a way to shorten the process to minutes. The 17 trace metal elements in rare earths are critical to the manufacture of nearly all hi-tech products, from semiconductors to smartphones and stealth fighter jets. https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3012641/chinese-scientists-find-faster-way-extract-rare-earths-may-also

A fake city that’s used to test self-driving cars

Uber is testing its self-driving cars in a fake city it built in Pittsburgh, called Almono. The fake city has a giant roundabout, fake cars, and roaming mannequins that jump out into the street without warning. Uber also uses Almono to train vehicle operators before allowing them to monitor the cars in the real world. www.businessinsider.com/ubers-fake-city-pittsburgh-self-driving-cars-2017-10

A Smart Bike Helmet that Can Detect Collisions and Change Shape

Lukas Franz has created Madillo, a helmet that can detect collisions and call an ambulance if the wearer gets into an accident. The helmet is made of an auxetic material, a material that becomes thicker when stretched, to provide a better fit for its wearer. The Madillo helmet also includes smart sensors and LEDs weaved into the design. The helmet will shine whenever the wearer changes directions. If it senses that the rider has been in a collision, it even sends an SOS signal out to the nearest hospital and summons for an ambulance, while transmitting the location until help arrives. https://designbylukasfranz.com/vadillo
