The world’s first “Tesla Town” in Melbourne

Tesla toen

Plans have been made for what could be the world’s first “Tesla Town” – a mini-suburb on the outskirts of the Melbourne CBD whose homes will include rooftop solar and Tesla battery storage as standard design features. It’s being built by local property group Glenvill, and this green development’s first 60 homes are now on sale. It’s on the Yarra River and is called YarraBend. www.yarrabend.com.au

Why crime in NY declined

IMG_9667

IdeaSpies attended the last lecture given by Professor Kenneth Jackson today after 40 years of lectures on history and social sciences at Columbia University. He attributed the decline in crime in NY since the mid 90’s to factors such as more aggressive policing, handgun control, an aging population and abortions reducing unwanted children, which should interest other cities concerned about crime rates.

A cotton shirt you don’t have to iron

Imagine a shirt with the soft, natural feel of cotton but it doesn’t need to be ironed. Imagine as well active wear that breathes and is not smelly. While some synthetic fibres can do this, they are made from petrochemicals and every time you wash them, tiny microfibers of material are pulled free and enter our waterways. These fibres do not break down and can build up in the food chain. When you wash cotton, fibres are also shed but these are biodegradable and will break down rapidly. Some 100 % cotton products currently don’t need ironing but these tend to have been treated with chemicals to give them their special properties. CSIRO is working on the solution. https://blog.csiro.au/best-of-both-whorls-cotton-with-the-benefits-of-synthetics/

North Sydney to become Non Smoking- NS

North Sydney Council has passed a recommendation to make its CBD the first smoke-free business district in Australia. The ultimate aim is to make North Sydney the first smoke-free municipality in Australia. There are about 72,000 residents and this means all shared public spaces – streets, plazas and parks – will become no-go zones for smokers. It includes outdoor seating areas in front of restaurants and cafes. Smoking prevalence in the Northern Sydney local health district is 9.5 per cent, lower than the state average of 15.2 per cent. https://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/north-sydney-set-to-become-australia-s-first-smoke-free-cbd-20180925-p505xn.html

Sydney helps redress Wikipedia gender bias

Women are the focus of only about 15 per cent of Wikipedia profile entries and comprise only about 10 to 15 per cent contributors. Various global initiatives have been launched to redress the imbalance, and the University of Sydney joined in this month with a “Women in Wikipedia: 2018 Edit-a-thon”, where about 50 students, staff members and volunteers created and updated entries on women — particularly Australian women writers, scientists and scholars. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/higher-education/sydney-uni-tackles-wikipedia-gender-bias/news-story/e40cecc8bfcb79953a7c1f6544dedbc2

Hippo Water Roller Project

IdeaSpies01

The “Hippo Water Roller Project” was established in 1994 in response to the unique needs and constraints in terms of access to water of rural women and children across Africa. Now simply referred to as “Hippo Roller”, the broad social impact of this social enterprise has been felt in more than 20 countries, with a total distribution of 50,000 Hippo Water Rollers, and a reach of close to half a million people. Hippo Roller makes it extremely easy to collect water in tough rural conditions – up to 5x more water than a single bucket, by simply rolling it along the ground. Around 750 million people do not have easy access to clean water. Millions of women and children walk several hours each day to collect water with heavy 20l / 5gal buckets, balanced on their heads. www.hipporoller.org
