Magnetically guided bubbles to attack tumours


Scientists have developed magnetic micro-bubbles, covered with magnetic nanoparticles, which have been embedded with anti-cancer drugs and injected into the bloodstreams of laboratory mice. The magnetisation enabled scientists to steer the micro-bubbles towards tumours and ultrasound vibrations were used to cause the bubbles to explode, shooting anti-cancer drug-carrying nanoparticles into the tumour tissue. This targeted drug delivery could be an alternative to chemotherapy which attacks healthy cells as well as tumours.
