Sydney helps redress Wikipedia gender bias

Women are the focus of only about 15 per cent of Wikipedia profile entries and comprise only about 10 to 15 per cent contributors. Various global initiatives have been launched to redress the imbalance, and the University of Sydney joined in this month with a “Women in Wikipedia: 2018 Edit-a-thon”, where about 50 students, staff members and volunteers created and updated entries on women — particularly Australian women writers, scientists and scholars. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/higher-education/sydney-uni-tackles-wikipedia-gender-bias/news-story/e40cecc8bfcb79953a7c1f6544dedbc2

An entirely new category of shoes inspired by natural materials, and an ongoing mantra to create better things in a better way.

A native of New Zealand, Tim Brown was always well versed in the magical qualities of merino wool. Inherently curious, he began asking himself why such a remarkable, sustainable resource was virtually absent in the footwear industry. And with that spirit of wonder, the Allbirds journey began. After years of researching and tinkering, Tim teamed up with Joey Zwillinger, an engineer and renewables expert. Together, they crafted a revolutionary wool fabric made specifically for footwear. MADE FROM NATURE -The footwear industry often overlooks Mother Nature’s materials in favor of cheaper, synthetic alternatives. We think it’s time to change that. au.allbirds.com

Free public transport to reduce road traffic

Germany has surprised neighbours with a radical proposal to reduce road traffic by making public transport free. The proposal will be tested by the end of this year in five cities across western Germany, including former capital Bonn and industrial cities Essen and Mannheim. Countries that fail to keep to EU limits could face legal action at the European Court of Justice, the EU’s highest tribunal, which can levy fines on member states. www.inkl.com/newsletters/morning-edition/news/germany-eyes-free-public-transport-to-banish-air-pollution?

Mobile drug testing to reduce car accidents

Safe driving requires good judgement and sharp concentration. You also need to react quickly to changing situations on the road. Drug driving puts everyone on the road at risk. NSW research shows that the presence of illegal drugs is now involved in more fatal crashes than drink driving. Mobile Drug Testing (MDT) has been introduced to operate alongside Random Breath Testing (RBT) for alcohol by police in NSW. MDT detects drivers who have recently used three common illegal drugs: ecstasy, cannabis and speed (including ice). A test for cocaine is being planned soon because of concerns about its increasing use. The roadside tests involve a saliva test. If the initial saliva test indicates positive, then the driver must undertake a second saliva swab at a mobile drug bus or police station. http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/alcoholdrugs/drugdriving/index.html

Cool pavements to reduce temperatures

06California-Today-pavement-master768 (1)

In Los Angeles, where summer temperatures regularly surpass 38 degrees Celsius, or 100 degrees Fahrenheit, workers are coating streets in special grey treatments in a bid to help reduce the heat. It’s the first major city to test the technology. Normal black asphalt absorbs 80 to 95 per cent of sunlight, while the gray “cool pavement” reflects it – reducing ground temperature and urban street heat. http://www.scmp.com/news/world/united-states-canada/article/2106692/los-angeles-coating-roads-reflective-paint-beat-heat?

Lighter washing machine that reduces CO2 emissions.

halo washer

A Nottingham Trent University student has discovered a simple trick to cut the weight of washing machines, making them easier to move and more environmentally friendly. Most washing machines have a 25kg block of concrete near the top to hold the machine steady during a spin cycle. This significantly adds to the weight of the appliance. Much CO2 is released during the production of concrete and more is released by gas powered transport vehicles. This simple change would replace the heavy concrete counterweight with an empty plastic container that is filled with water when the washing machine is installed. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/08/04/students-simple-washing-machine-idea-could-save-thousands-tonnes
