A solar system that follows the sun like a flower

IMG_2277

Smartflower is a fully integrated, all-in-one solar system that can be installed anywhere. If you ever have to move it, smartflower can be packed up and moved to a new site. Its smart tracking makes the most of the sun’s rays to generate energy. When the sun rises it automatically unfolds and starts producing electricity for you. When the sun sets it automatically folds itself back into a secure position and waits for sunrise. http://smartflowersolar.com/

3D solar towers offer up to 20 x more energy

IMG_2164

According to MIT researchers 3D solar towers can generate anywhere from double up to 20 times the amount of energy as flat solar panels with the same base area. These 3D designs increase electricity output because their vertical surfaces allow them to capture sunlight even when the sun is closest to the horizon during mornings, evenings and winter and when sunlight is partially obstructed by shadows or cloud cover. http://news.mit.edu/2012/three-dimensional-solar-energy-0327

The world’s first hydro-solar power plant

IMG_1777

In Portugal the world’s first hydro-solar power plant has commenced operation. The Alto Rabagão dam, near the country’s northern border with Spain, added 840 floating solar panels earlier this year, Floating solar panels offer a means of expanding hydroelectric plants’ energy capacity without embarking on costly dam reconstruction. http://m.huffingtonpost.com.au/entry/hydro-solar-plant_us_595f96dee4b02e9bdb0c0fa6

Canadian Solar, one of the world’s largest solar power companies, has acquired a minority equity interest in eNow, a U.S. company specializing in solar-based energy management system for the commercial transportation industry. The investment will accelerate the expansion and growth of photovoltaic (PV) based mobile energy solutions which will reduce transportation fuel costs while making a significant impact in cutting vehicle emissions in the commercial transportation industry. http://investors.canadiansolar.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=196781&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=2272206

A solar powered machine that recycles waste into tiles

IMG_1069

This Trashpresso machine holds a complete mobile waste recycling plant capable of upcycling plastic and fabric waste into architectural tiles. A key element is the solar panels on its exterior, which means that it doesn’t require access to the grid or a generator to produce enough electricity for the waste upcycling processes. Another is its size that allows it to be moved nearly anywhere a tractor trailer can reach, including remote locations. https://www.treehugger.com/sustainable-product-design/solar-powered-trashpresso-converts-plastic-and-fabric-waste-floor-tiles.html

A solar powered boat in the Amazon

IdeaSpies solar powered boat

This new boat will be used by the Achuar people within their territory of Ecuador and Peru which remains roadless and pristine. Walking and canoes that use gasoline are the main means of transportation for the Achuar. But their territory has a vast network of rivers and tributaries, and plenty of sun, meaning that an environmentally-friendly alternative to the gas boats – which do not reflect the Achuar’s commitment to protect their rainforest home – is now possible. https://www.pachamama.org/news/the-achuar-will-have-a-network-of-boats-and-solar-recharge-stations-in-their-rivers

A better way to generate solar energy

IMG_9602

CSIRO’s solar thermal heliostat mirrors are hitting the world stage to help China meet its renewable energy targets. The CSIRO has announced a new partnership with Chinese company, Thermal Focus, to use their unique heliostat (mirror) technology for concentrating solar thermal electricity generation. An advantage of the CSIRO system is the very low cost of storing thermal energy, giving their technology great potential for medium to large-scale solar power, even when the sun isn’t shining, meaning the power can be used through the day, and the night! https://blog.csiro.au/aussie-solar-know-how-provides-a-ray-of-sunshine-for-china/
