An electric flying car

DI8jJZ_WsAADYyA (1)

Electric cars are on the way and now electric flying cars are as well. Lilium is among several companies looking to usher in an era of Jetsons-type flying cars. Lilium’s vehicle is an electric jet, designed to take off and land vertically, like a helicopter. They are planning their first manned flight in 2019, with a rollout of commercial air taxis by 2025. www.lilium.com

A quicker way to build a quantum computer

1504703995267

Scientists at UNSW in Australia have discovered a new approach to quantum computing. They predict it will remove a hurdle that threatened to stall progress on scaling up the number of quantum computer bits-known as qubits- on silicon chips needed to make quantum computing viable. Their approach makes more room on a silicon atom to squeeze in more qubits by pulling electrons away from the nucleus. Unlike the discrete zeros and ones now used in so-called “classical” computing, qubits can be either a one, a zero or both at the same time, opening the way for an exponential increase in computing speeds using these “superpositions”. Many problems now limited by computing power, from medicine to climate modelling, would be more easily solved with quantum computing. http://www.smh.com.au/technology/sci-tech/nobody-saw-it-breakthrough-claimed-by-unsws-quantum-computing-team-20170905-gybmph.html

An internet “walkie talkie” that’s useful in an emergency

fire-2704064_1280 (1)

Zello is a free internet “walkie-talkie” app that’s very useful in regional emergencies such as a hurricane, fire or flood. In a few seconds of hearing your voice, an operator can guess what part of the country you’re from, if you’ve been drinking, what mood you’re in and whether you’re afraid or in distress. www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2017/08/31/the-cajun-navys-secret-weapon-for-saving-lives-the-human-voice/?

Using AI for mineral exploration

main_expl

EARTH AI are helping mineral explorers identify promising areas. They do this by analysing data from multiple sources and using a machine learning algorithm to identify areas where minerals are likely to be found. 47 layers of remote sensing and geophysical data are analysed at once by machine learning – they can highlight ore bodies and alteration haloes as well as map out hard rocks and regolith with extreme detail. http://www.earth-ai.com

3D printing to produce car and truck parts

IMG_2211

Daimler, the world’s largest truck manufacturer, will use three-dimensional printing (3D) to produce spare parts, the latest example of how digital technologies are radically reshaping automotive manufacturing and its supply chain. Rather than shipping vehicle parts across the globe, carmakers including BMW and Volkswagen are experimenting with so-called additive manufacturing. This relies on sending a digital blueprint of a component to a printer which creates parts by using lasers to melt powders into plastic, glass, metals and even ceramics. https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/279090

An automated bike tower

IMG_2208

Eco Cycle towers have been installed in Japan and the UK. There are two models, with one providing storage for up to 204 bikes and a smaller version that can store up to 58 bikes. Both models resemble small towers and can be installed either above or below ground. Once you have swiped your Eco Cycle Card to retrieve your bike, it is returned to you at ground level within 13 seconds. http://newatlas.com/eco-cycle-automated-cycle-storage/40496/
