The world’s first commercial rock lobster hatchery

A new partnership with the University of Tasmania is planning to commercialise rock lobster production research and establish the world’s first hatchery for rock lobsters. Despite the high value of rock lobsters the long and complex lifecycle has made it impossible before now to produce the species in a commercially scalable hatchery. Australian companies are being offered the opportunity to collaborate with the University of Tasmania to scale-up and commercialise its innovative rock lobster aquaculture systems and related technologies.. http://www.imas.utas.edu.au/news/news-items/world-leading-aquaculture-breakthrough-to-transform-lobster-production

FROM CHICKEN FEATHERS TO BIOPLASTICS

I am involved with an Australian Research Scientist who has found ways of using Chicken feathers to make plastics for a wide range of industries including : Mining – Construction – Automotive – Packaging – Cosmetics – Textiles and many more. The protein constituting the Chicken Feathers is KERATIN, that produces very strong and very light materials. Turning Chicken Feathers, being a waste, into usable materials, will be a First ! Personalised gifts while you wait

I first discovered this shop in Venice a few years ago and bought a personalised apron for our daughter. She recently discovered one in Syracuse Sicily. I’m now in Florence and there’s one here near the Duomo. Surprising that there are not more around the world. A machinist sits at the window and embroiders any name that you like on their items. www.ricamiveronicaroma.it

A robot fish that could revolutionise how we view the ocean

A team from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory has developed a soft robotic fish that can independently swim alongside real fish in the ocean and take high-resolution photos and videos. It’s the first robotic fish that can swim untethered in three dimensions for extended periods of time. A robot like this can help explore a reef more closely than current robots. It has the potential to be a new type of tool for ocean exploration and to open up new avenues for uncovering the mysteries of marine life.” http://news.mit.edu/2018/soft-robotic-fish-swims-alongside-real-ones-coral-reefs-0321

An automated warehouse of the future

Imagine a huge warehouse with groceries going in one end and shopping orders coming out the other. Humans do the unpacking and packing, while in the middle, robots sort and rearrange this vast inventory 24 hours a day. This is the latest highly automated warehouse of Ocado, a British online-only supermarket that also sells its technology to other global grocers. This algorithmically designed warehouse maximizes available space while digitizing some of the more arduous, complex and dull aspects of warehouse work. And by licensing and selling its automation technology to other companies, Ocado monetises the research and development needed to consistently disrupt itself.  https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/8/17331250/automated-warehouses-jobs-ocado-andover-amazon?

A nerve implant to control pain that doesn’t require surgery

The 6.5-millimeter-long programmable implant can receive both power and data via ultrasound through more than 10.5 centimeters of tissue. Because of its versatility and small size it could be injected through a needle rather than require surgery. Scientists envision that it will greatly expand the number of conditions treated with electrical stimulation of the body’s nerves. So far, most of those treatments have focused on stimulating spinal nerves for controlling pain and the vagus nerve for epilepsy and depression. Non-drug treatments using nerve stimulators can be transformative for many patients. A nerve stimulator that could be implanted with minimally invasive surgery, or simply be injected, would allow nerve stimulation treatments to reach 100-fold more patients. Animal testing to prove the project is planned soon. https://spectrum.ieee.org/the-human-os/biomedical/bionics/ultrasoundpowered-injectable-nerve-implant-works-deep-in-body?
