A drug that can mimic the benefits of exercise

Not everyone can exercise. People with muscle-wasting diseases and movement disorders, the frail, the very obese and post-surgical patients are among those who face a significant challenge when it comes to exercise. This can be frustrating, considering the well-established benefits of exercise. A pill may be on the way to stimulate the body into producing some of the same effects as exercise -a drug that can help us game the system that is naturally activated during exercise.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/an-exercise-pill-may-be-in-the-future-for-those-incapable-of-working-out/2018/03/02/e8af9370-1bdb-11e8-ae5a-16e60e4605f3_story.html?

An X-ray for plants

FluroSat is a data analytics platform for farmers which combines drone and satellite imagery with algorithms to assess plant health, diagnose problems and direct fertiliser application. The easiest way to imagine it is as an X-ray for plants. When taking an X-ray you can separate tissues from bones. When you take a camera that has very high spectral resolution, you can see every wavelength of light being separated into different layers of information, just like bones and muscles. The system highlights the hot spots which are inconsistent with the rest of the field. Farmers use this map to identify where crops need more fertiliser. www.Flurosat.com

Saving beaches by crushing beer bottles

Sand is a major ingredient of mortar, plaster, concrete, and asphalt. Businesses often collect beach sand in bulk as a result hence beaches are retreating. DB has created machines, for use in bars and restaurants, that recycle empty beer bottles. You push the container through a bottle-shaped hole, then watch as a vacuum system removes silica dust and plastic labels, leaving behind pure glass sand. Each bottle produces 200 grams of powder substitute in about five seconds. DB Export Beer Bottle Sand will be distributed for roading projects, commercial and residential construction, even golf bunkers. www.geek.com/tech/machine-crushes-beer-bottles-into-sand-to-save-new-zealand-beaches-1690917/

3D printed knits that move with your body

Ministry of Supply makes 3D Print-Knit garments that move with your body because they are engineered in multiple dimensions with a pattern that takes into account your joints, plus the areas you put the most strain on during your day. As well as greater comfort, this printing process creates almost no waste, unlike the 35% that’s usually left over when using traditional fabrics and techniques. It will also last you longer. Traditional garments are most vulnerable to wear and tear at their weakest points – the seams. These knits have no seams. www.ministryofsupply.com

A plastic-free supermarket aisle

Supermarket chain Ekoplaza has piloted a “world first” plastic-free supermarket aisle in Amsterdam, prompting calls from campaigners for retailers to roll them out in more places. Goods within the aisle will carry the Plastic Free Mark, a label introduced by A Plastic Planet to help shoppers easily identify products that are completely free of plastic packaging. Plastic-free aisles are seen as an innovative way of testing the compostable biomaterials that offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic packaging. www.inkl.com/glance/news/netherlands-opens-world-s-first-plastic-free-supermarket-aisle-as-uk-urged-to-follow-example?

You can’t prosper as a country unless you educate girls

Dr Kakenya Ntaiya has set up a school where parents must agree that their girls will not undergo the tribal ritual of circumcision and will not be married before they finish school. The Kakenya Center for Excellence has already transformed the lives of more than 230 young women in Kenya Africa through education. Some of the girls have studied in Australia and directors were told about it this week at an Ashurst luncheon- an inspiring story  including how Kakenya agreed to have the circumcision ritual so other girls would not have to undergo it. https://www.kakenyasdream.org

Nanobot Eyedrops to Repair Eyesight

Many people develop nearsightedness or farsightedness during their lifetimes. “Nanodrops,” a new eye drop developed by Israeli ophthalmologists, has successfully fixed corneas in pig eyes, and could potentially do the same for people. Developed by researchers from the Shaare Zedek Medical Center and Bar-Ilan University in Israel, the drops could someday improve both our nearsightedness and farsightedness. Patients would have to launch an app on their phones to measure their eyes’ refraction and create a laser pattern. This pattern would then be “stamped” onto the corneal surface of the eyes. Not ready for human trials yet, but it’s encouraging research. https://futurism.com/nanodrops-repair-corneas-replace-glasses
