Volunteers help drug-addicted babies with cuddles

IMG_1120

Babies in withdrawal who are held often require less medication and go home sooner than babies who aren’t. Cuddling helps them manage through their symptoms by making them feel safe and secure. Cuddle-care programs are now offered in many US states and volunteers are encouraged to join. http://educateinspirechange.org/health/can-volunteer-cuddle-drug-addicted-babies-order-help-heal/

A win for public health!

IMG_1119

The World Trade Organization has upheld Australia’s right to impose plain-package label restrictions on the sale of tobacco products, dealing a blow to the cigarette industry. A WTO dispute-settlement panel backed Australia’s argument that the rules it set in 2011 don’t violate trade law because they qualify as a legitimate public health measure. More countries are now expected to introduce plain-package laws, one of the most popular ideas on IdeaSpies. http://www.ideaspies.com/clever-legislation-stops-branding-on-cigarette-packets/ https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2017-05-04/wto-said-to-uphold-australia-s-ban-on-cigarette-logos

A solar powered machine that recycles waste into tiles

IMG_1069

This Trashpresso machine holds a complete mobile waste recycling plant capable of upcycling plastic and fabric waste into architectural tiles. A key element is the solar panels on its exterior, which means that it doesn’t require access to the grid or a generator to produce enough electricity for the waste upcycling processes. Another is its size that allows it to be moved nearly anywhere a tractor trailer can reach, including remote locations. https://www.treehugger.com/sustainable-product-design/solar-powered-trashpresso-converts-plastic-and-fabric-waste-floor-tiles.html

Making political donations transparent

IMG_1045

A new platform from GIS People is operating in Queensland to show the public what donations have been made to political parties via an Electoral Commission of Queensland website. The system means citizens can now see donations within seven business days, rather than waiting six months. It has scope to be real-time in the future and other Australian states could follow. http://www.afr.com/technology/startup-gis-people-promises-to-lift-the-lid-on-political-donations-20170413-gvkebs#ixzz4fyUsz3tc

An energy community

IMG_1033

Brooklyn Microgrid is creating a local, neighborhood-powered grid that could operate in parallel to the main grid. One of the appeals of a microgrid is its potential to provide electricity to homes even if the main grid goes down. They are laying the groundwork for a future in which communities produce their own electricity based on a blockchain technology where neighbors can buy and sell solar energy that they generate. http://brooklynmicrogrid.com/
