More rights for women led by a robot who’s now a citizen

9F7B612A-9815-426E-AEEB-144CDE3BA679

Saudi Arabia recently granted citizenship to Sophia, a humanoid robot. It’s the first time a country has granted a robot the same basic status and privileges as humans. This clever idea could lead to more recognition of women’s rights in some countries. http://metro.co.uk/2017/10/27/robot-becomes-first-in-the-world-to-be-given-citizenship-7031214/

A robotic surgeon’s assistant that can feel your body

38E5F5B9-1CB6-4EB2-9633-A623D3493EE5

The FDA has recently cleared Senhance, a robotically assisted surgical device for use in minimally invasive surgeries. Senhance enhances surgeons’ capabilities through a screen with a 3D HD view of the surgical field, where they remotely control three separate arms, each equipped with surgical instruments. Senhance’s camera can follow their eye movements and show what they’d be looking at if they were manually performing the surgery on screen. The machine’s controllers can also make surgeons feel the stiffness of the tissue they’re operating on. https://www.engadget.com/2017/10/15/fda-approves-senhance-robotic-surgical-assistant/

A 3D zebra crossing that slows down cars

3D-pedestrian-crossing-island-59f0352da431b__880 (1)

Zebra crossings are meant to slow drivers down and make them aware of pedestrians crossing the street. But, far too often, drivers and bikers will zoom through them. To combat the issue, one town in Iceland is now using 3-D crosswalks to make them stand out to drivers and slow down speeding cars. They look like a roadblock from a distance, and it’s only when you slow down that you see it’s only a zebra crossing. https://www.simplemost.com/iceland-3d-crosswalk-slow-down-drivers/

A 6th sense for blind people

pulsera-app

A wristband called Sunu emits a high-frequency sound wave that bounces off objects as far as 14 feet in front before registering as a gentle, pulsing vibration. The closer the object is — whether it’s a wall, trash can or person — the more frequent the pulses become, allowing blind people to create a mental map of the world around them using echolocation. It’s like the sonar device being used in vehicles to sense nearby objects and avoid crashes. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2017/10/27/for-decades-the-blind-have-used-canes-to-get-around-now-an-special-wrist-band-helps-them-locate-hazards/?

A startup that allows travelling mums to send breast milk home

099AB2FF-AADF-4A82-B630-1A112409FF50

US law requires employers to provide nursing mothers with a “reasonable break time” and a place to express milk, but those requirements do not extend to business travel. Milk Stork is a startup that allows a traveling mother to ship her milk to her baby at home with a cooler that arrives in her hotel room as a postpaid package. She can send up to 72 ounces per day with the materials provided, and packages are shipped overnight anywhere in the United States. This service is making it more possible for women to continue their careers while having children. www.milkstork.com

It’s pedal-electric and has a 400w motor to amplify pedaling.
