Ideal knitwear- no seams, no waste, 3D printed.

Typically, a knitted garment consists of separate parts— the front and back body panels and the sleeves—which are sewn together afterward. By contrast, SHIMA SEIKI’s WHOLEGARMENT knitwear is produced in one entire piece, three-dimensionally, directly on the knitting machine. Consequently it requires no expensive, time-consuming post-production labour, realizing a whole new kind of knitwear that encourages local production and local fashion designers. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-29/3d-knitting-machine-helps-local-designers/9667154

A breakthrough in detecting early stage stomach cancer

Two Japanese national research institutes have succeeded in using artificial intelligence to identify early stage stomach cancer with a high accuracy rate. The breakthrough should help extend the lives of patients in Japan in particular, where stomach cancer is one of the leading causes of death. Stomach cancer causes few symptoms and is often found only after it reaches an advanced stage. At an early stage, even specialists have a difficult time distinguishing the cancer from inflammation. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/07/22/national/science-health/japanese-researchers-use-ai-identify-early-stage-stomach-cancer-high-accuracy/#.W1Vk-aR_XDs

A new fashion styling service

Style Board is Nordstrom’s latest curation service. It offers a team of online personal stylists who will handpick items–clothing, accessories, jewelry–based on a questionnaire that helps them better understand your personal style. Within less than a day, the stylist emails you a “board” of curated designs, which will then wait for you in a dressing room. Should you want further expertise, a stylist will assist you in Nordstrom Local —another Nordstrom initiative that offers services rather than inventory. https://www.fastcompany.com/90180401/exclusive-nordstom-expands-its-innovative-inventory-free-service-hubs?

Reviving damaged heart tissues

Researchers are planning transplants that may revive tissues thought to be hopelessly damaged, including the heart and brain. The plan is to infuse mitochondria or a placebo solution into the coronary arteries of people having bypass surgery or — an even more dire situation for the heart — having both bypass and valve surgery. The patients would be those whose hearts are so damaged that it would be difficult to wean them from heart-lung machines after surgery. For these patients, mitochondrial transplants are an appealing option. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/07/10/health/mitochondria-transplant-heart-attack.html?
